bowel movement
by: Anonymous

Hi Margaret

It's definitely is out of the norm or average, for a baby that is younger than 6 weeks to have such little bowel movements, but not all babies are the same, and if the doctor says its fine, then obviously baby is happy, healthy and growing just fine, so there is no need to worry. You also said that the baby's stools are soft, which indicates that it is not constipation.

Breast milk is absorbed much easier than formula and it is this reason that may cause baby to only have one stool every 7 to 10 days. In babies that are 6 weeks and older, they often have stools either 7-10 days apart or they can have 3-5 stools everyday, it all depends on the individual.

not constipated
by: Tracy

Hi Ouma

Please do not use sunlight bath soap in that delicate area. There are harmful chemicals in soap that can harm baby.

If the baby is exclusively breastfed, it is normal for baby to have a stool every day or every 8 days or anything in between.

If the stool is soft, baby is not constipated!

constipation

My daughter is 8 weeks old and seems constipated she is breastfed and on formula for when we run errands. I don't pump enough to store. I do bicycle exercises with her, and still nothing. Is this normal for a bottle/breast fed baby to not stool for days at a time?

by kristen
(Colorado )

My son is 6 months old now, we started seeing a change in how often he was pooping about 3 months of age, it now has been going on for 3 months now.

Recently he has had solid stool and he's having to push so hard he get goose bumps and shakes and wines and I'm doing most everything I can think of and have been told to.

I do prune juice now full strength I'm doing the pears peaches peas. I have not yet tried the kyro syrup. I need ideas to help soften the stool.

softening baby's stools
by: Anonymous

Hi!

Have you just recently started introducing solids? Could it be that this is constipating baby?

Some signs of constipation in babies

* Dry hard stools, that baby struggles to pass.
* Baby may draw his/her legs up to tummy, may make grunting noises and become red in the face.

Some causes of constipation may include:

* Certain types of formula.
* Rice and banana are often associated with constipation. (Avoid these while baby is constipated)

Things that can help:

* Pureed pears can help.
* Glycerin suppositoriess can be inserted when you see your baby is struggling to have a bowel movement.
* One tsp of flax seed oil can be added to baby's cereal.
* Massage can also help relieve gas as well as get baby's bowels moving.

poop frequency
by: Tracy

Hi Grace

Stool frequency in the breastfed baby does slow down after a few weeks, so your baby can go from having 7 poops per day to only one poop every 7 to 10 days!

If your baby does have a hard stool and is showing signs of discomfort, its best to then go to the doc.

Reoccurring constipation

by A Hirschsprungs Mommy
(Ca)

Reoccurring constipation can also be a symptom. My first born was having a hard time with constipation and would go days without having a bowel movement and later she was diagnosed with Hirschsprung's Disease.

It's where the muscle movement in the lower intestine did not develop and therefore they have a difficult time passing stool. My advice is to monitor how frequently the your child gets constipated and speak to your pediatrician.
