Breast feeding and menstruation

by Alda Mills
(South Africa)

I have been nursing my son for just over two years now. My menstrual cycle decided to return on the 11th of January this year, and I have been having my period since. It has not stopped. It has been three weeks now and although there is no heavy flow, I am still required to use tampons. Is this normal? So will my cycle just carry on as it is probably supposed to start again in a week or so's time? Any advice welcome. Thank you!!

Hi Alda

I'm also from South Africa ;-)

I would not worry too much about it, it could just be your body's way of getting things back on track again after two years of rest.

You are blessed that your period stayed away so long. And, congrats for making the two year mark! My two year breastfeeding mark is coming up in June with my second child! ;-)

My periods returned after the first 6 months and have been completely haywire. I get and skip and sometimes I also have longer periods than before...its all normal.
