Diarrhea concerns

by Tiffany
(Virginia)

Hi, my 6 month old that has been breast fed since birth and really haven't had any problems up until now.

She has had diarrhea once a day for the last 2 weeks and has no other symptoms.

I'm a little concerned. I've called the doctor and they told me to bring her in but I don't know if I should since there are no other symptoms.

Oh, she has been teething for 3 months. After reading this and talking with family it seems I need to see if there is something that I eat that is causing it. I just dont know where to start! Any suggestions?

Diarrhea
by: Zelda Behr

Here are a few things that could cause this...

-Food allergy, always wait 3 days in between introducing new foods to check for allergies.

-Too much fruit juice

-Teething (check for mucus in poop)

-Formilk hindmilk in-balance always make sure baby finishes one breast before offering the other

-Engorgement may occur when baby drinks less after introducing solids.

Consult your doctor if the diarrhea occurs with other symptoms like vomiting, dehydration and fever.

by GurugAkhila H

Hi,

My LO is 4.5 months and is pooping 4-5 times, daily (little at a time). Its yellow, seedy but watery and comes out of his diaper. Sometimes its frothy too.

Is this normal? He used to go once daily with thicker consistency when 2-3 months old..

very normal
by: Tracy

Hi

Yes, it sounds very normal. The change could be due to many different things.

It could be due to any introduction of solids or liquids in your baby's diet. This is because your baby's digestive system needs to become accustomed to digesting anything other than breast milk.

It could also be that your baby is going through a growth spurt, which is common at 4 months. Is he breastfeeding more often than usual? The increase in feedings will increase your milk supply, therefore increasing the amount of lactose taken in, which has a laxative effect.

Another reason could be that your baby is starting to teethe. Babies usually have a runnier, acidic smelling poo during teething, due to the fact that they ingest more saliva.

I would suggest that you keep a close eye on the bum to prevent a rash. After you have cleaned your baby's bottom, you can smear some of your own breast milk on the area and leave to air dry for a few minutes before applying the bum cream. Your own breast milk has healing qualities to it, that will prevent a rash. Only do this if your baby is NOT suffering from a yeast infection. Yeast thrives on sugar and your milk contains sugar. An alternative to breast milk if your baby ever has a yeast infection, is coconut oil. Coconut oil contains the same lactic acid as breast milk and is great for preventing yeast infections.

Hope this helps
Kind regards

4.5 month old very runny poop

Hi, my baby is nearly 4.5 months old and is breastfed exclusively. He normally does one very big runny poo a day that is so runny it usually comes out his nappy. It is yellow in colour and sweet smelling and doesn't seem to bother him. I know breastfed baby poop is loose but how loose is normal?
