My babys stool

by Maggie
(Sophia, nc united states)

My baby girl is 2 months of age now and I breastfed for the 1st month but her stool has only looked normal for a week, it is light and dark green, runny and smells really strong, my 3 yr old son and I had a stomach bug and the pediatrician said that might be what's causing it and it should run it's course but that was over a month ago and my mama told me that me and my brother both had problems with formula that contained iron and that the iron in her formula could very well be the cause of it, I'm seriously wanting to change her formula, I give her gas drops but she is still pretty gassy and my mama said the formula could be the cause of that as well, any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

I completely forgot to add that she only poos once a day or once every 2 days but doesn't seem constipated and never any blood her poop is always green and runny...

skin to skin and comfort nursing
by: Tracy

Sounds to me as if he had a tummy bug. And it sounds as though things are returning to normal.

Your baby is weak due to dehydration caused by loss of water from the tummy runs.

Just breastfeed your baby as much as possible. Allow comfort feeding and lots of skin to skin contact.

Sudden Long term Color Change in Poop

by Miriam

My baby girl is 8 weeks old and about 5 days ago her poop suddenly changed from yellow seedy to a dark green sticky consistency. Could this be caused by the introduction of cucumber and tomato in my diet or something else, and is there anything major to worry about? It has made her more gassy and uncomfortable. Please help I am a little worried! Thanks

Has there been any changes in the frequency of feeds?

oversupply
by: Tracy, CBC, CLD (CBI)

Hey, then baby is probably going through a growth spurt.

During growth spurts, babies will drink more and this can often cause a mother's milk supply to increase. This increase in supply can cause lactose overload in baby, due to the fact that baby might be getting in a little more fore-milk than usual. This is what is perhaps causing the green stool color and the gassiness. A very bad lactose overload can cause green, frothy, explosive stools and colic symptoms.

A growth spurt usually only lasts a few days.
After the growth spurt, your baby will eat the same as before and your supply will drop again.

If you would like to decease your supply a little, you can breastfeed baby from only one side with each breastfeeding session. (you can pump the other breast a little, if it causes some engorgement)

It's normal ;-)
by: Tracy

Hi there,

It is completely normal. Some babies (even formula fed ones)do poop after every feeding

Frequent pooping (up to five or more per day) can continue even after a year of age.

If your baby's stools are consistent and baby seems happy, then you don't need to worry.

Sometimes a baby that has often bowel movements may suffer from diaper rash, but this is easily taken care of with just a little diaper cream or Vaseline (petroleum jelly).

Hope this answered your question

Hi Rhiza

The color of the stool alone does not really indicate a problem.

Is your baby showing any other signs of discomfort and what is the consistency of the stool?

What milk was your baby drinking? And what milk is baby drinking now?

Kind regards

normal baby poop
by: Tracy

Some newborn babies do poop with every feed, this is normal in the breastfed baby, your baby may poop between 7 and 15 times per day. As your baby gets older he/she may poop less, some babies then go 7 days before having a stool.

If the stool is very watery you should see your doctor, but a normal breastfed baby poop is usually a mustardy yellow color, grainy in texture and quite runny.

Here is all our info on normal infant stools...

Breastfed Baby Poops Once a Day

by Sheila Owen
(Norman, OK)

Question:

my baby is weaning off formula right now and is mostly breast feeding. Probably has half a meal in a bottle every 24 hours now.

He only has 1 bowel movement in 24 hours though. It's usually a really full diaper and it's very loose/liquidy and yellow. Is it ok to have only one bowel movement in 24 hours and be mostly breast fed?

Thank you!

stools
by: Tracy, CBC, CLD

Hi

A breastfed baby that is older than 6 weeks can either poop every time mom breastfeeds or once every 7 to 8 days.

So once you stop formula feeding all together, your baby might start pooping more or might only have a poop every few days.

Hope this answers your question

My 3 week old breastfed baby hasn't had a bm in 8 days. He acts miserable and cries when passing gas. I took him to the er the other day and they said to give him .5 ounces of prune juice. It's been 3 days since the juice and still nothing. He only feeds for about 5-10 minutes every two hours then acts bored with it. Is he not getting enough?

Baby
by: Lyssa

It is not uncommon for an exclusivly breastfed baby to only have a bowel movement every 7-10 days. If your baby seems uncomfortable, you can help him by rubbing slow, counter clokwise corcles low on his belly. You can also "bicycle" his legs (move his legs as if he was riding a bike) to help encourage everything to move down. Sitting him up nay also make it easier for him to go-it isn't easy while lying flat!

If baby has 3-6 wet diapers a day, seems content at the end of a feeding, and shows a steady growth , I wouldn't worry about how long or how often baby feeds. How long or often a baby feeds is not an indicator of how much a baby is getting, and neither is the amount or frequency of a bowel movement. Wet diapers is a better indication that baby is getting enough and is properly hydrated.

Yes, it's normal. Your breast milk changes as baby gets older, so difference in poop frequency and even consistency is to be expected.

So you can stop stressing! As long as your baby is happy and seems healthy, you dont need to worry.

The importants of water
by: Zelda Behr

Your blood, muscles, lungs, and brain all contain water.

Water helps to regulate body temperature, helps the nutrients in food to be absorbed, removes waist, transports oxygen to your cells and protects your joints and organs.

As a breastfeeding mom you made the choice to give your baby the best because breast milk has so many benefits.

Now why not give yourself the best by drinking water?

Caffeine and sugary sodas can cause your baby to be fussy and can also causes colic like symptoms so try to cut down to 3 a day.

As far as I can see your drinks can't cause the problem but here is a few things that could.

* Dehydration: this is very unlikely because you are breastfeeding. Breastfed babies get all the fluids they need from breast milk, but just in case you can try giving baby a little pre boiled water no more than 40ml.

* Some vegetables like asparagus in your diet can cause a strong smell in baby's urine.

* Urinary track infection can be caused by bacteria when not cleaning baby properly while changing diapers. In this case you need to consult your doctor.

Now the following are not as common so don't worry, first see if its not one of the other before jumping to conclusions.

* Diabetes: If you change the fluid intake of your baby and its not something you ate have your baby tested.

* Liver damage: If the problem persists consult your doctor.

Good luck hopes this helps.

pale yellow and frothy

by Tara

Could the F/H milk imbalance cause the poo to be a pale yellow and frothy color rather than green?

He pops while he's eating almost every single time.

My letdown is extremely fast and and I have a good amount of milk production.

We also give mycilon drops to help with the gas since it's constantly waking my baby up (perhaps that can cause the change in color).

The farts are beyond belief

by Rhoda

Our baby is 6 months old. I nurse him 20 + times a day, every hour on the hour if needed. If he won't eat I force feed him because you can't overfeed a breastfed baby.

The farts are beyond belief. The explosive turds are so bad that my husband abandons the house much of the time.

I think the main solution is to have another baby; at least that way I'll be changing diapers for two instead of one. He's thriving, I think.

Weighing Nappies??

by SusieMae

I'm wondering if keeping a record of formula taken and weighing nappies would be a good indication of how much milk my baby gets from me? Has anyone tried this?

I have a gorgeous month old baby boy, a brother for my beautiful 16 month old daughter. I had a tough time feeding my daughter, I never made enough milk and had to supplement from two weeks old.

I tried everything to increase my supply but nothing worked for me. I continued to put her to my breast for a year so she could get whatever I could give. Being unable to breastfeed my baby girl was absolutely heartbreaking for me.

I was delighted to discover I was pregnant again, although I was anxious that I would have the same trouble again.

I put my son to my breast as soon as he was born and as much as possible there after. I felt things were going better for me this time, but his weight dropped by 1lb 4oz.

I again have to supplement, with little success expressing. I'm working hard to not let it get me so down this time around, it took me a long time to come to terms with being unable to feed my daughter. I became quite withdrawn as it consumed all my thinking.

I know my son gets some milk from me, but have no idea how much. I sometimes feel guilty for putting my baby to my breast when I fear he isn't getting very much, but keep telling myself every drop is a bonus. Do babies pass the same amount as they take in or do they hold onto some? Am I obsessing?

My heart goes out to all other women in a similar situation x

my advice
by: Tracy

Hi

I wouldn't worry so much about the exact amount of breast milk that baby is taking in...as long as baby is getting some breast milk, it has great benefits.

Allow baby to breastfeed first for as long as he wants to, then give whichever supplement you have been giving, babies will usually let you know when they have had enough.

Just enjoy this time together, breastfeeding has so many benefits, not just nutrition but, bonding and prevention of PPD and so many other things...

The benefits of breastfeeding

Congrats on doing the best for your baby against all the odds...you are not the only mom struggling with this.

Also have you tried using herbs to increase supply?

HAVE YOU HEARD OR AN SNS
by: Michelle MOLESWORTH

Hi there

Have your considered using an SNS (Supplemental nursing system)?

It is a bottle that has a tube which you tape to your nipple. Your baby then gets your nipple and formula through the tube at the same time. I was devastated when I did not make enough milk for my son and I breast fed this way for 3 months.

At the time I was upset that I could not feed exclusively and felt like I needed a prosthetic breast to feed. But now looking back I am proud of what I did in my circumstances and I plan to do it all again if I have low milk supply with baby number two that we are now trying for.

bowel movement and pain in breast
by: Tracy

Hi Joana

It is perfectly normal for a baby that is "mostly breastfed" to have a bowel movement every ten days, since yours is getting in a bottle of formula too, six days is fine. As long as baby seems happy and healthy and does not have stools that are hard.

About the pain in your breast...have you always had the pain while breastfeeding or is it something that is recent?
