Lump
by: Lyssa

It is often common to be told to do a self breast exam once a month to check for lumps starting in puberty. While not breastfeeding, when doing a breast exam, you may feel a "lump" or "disk" in the center. This is usually normal. Any change in the size of this lump or additional lumps while not breastfeeding could indicate a problem and should be brought up with a healthcare professional such as your doctor or midwife.

While breastfeeding, it is good to continue monthly self exams. Sometimes, additional lumps can be felt and indicate a blocked duct. If nursing and massage do not remove r lessen the lump, this indicates is is most likely not a blocked duct and you should consult a healthcare professional.

At all times, if you feel something is "wrong" or "off", you should contact your healthcare professional for medical advice.

lump popping in breast tissue

by Kara

Breastfeeding moms... Tell me this is normal?!?!

I have been breastfeeding and noticing raised portion of skin on the chest area of my boob.

So I pinched it and it felt like something was popping or breaking up inside, there is no oozing. Just weird didn't hurt or turn red. Has anyone else experienced this or know what it is?

Im thinking that possibly you may be engorged and the milk is collecting more so in that area. If its not hurting or changing colors than you're good but I would still probably consult your doctor to make sure you dont have mastitis ( infection from plugged ducts).

Hi,

I am confused, have no idea what you are asking. Do you have a breast lump? Or are you producing milk after weaning?

advice
by: Tracy

She must breastfeed as much as possible.

Use warm compresses just before feedings or a warm shower or warm cloth on breast before nursing. Use a cold compress between feedings to relieve pain.

If she has a fever or flu symptoms, its best to get to the doctor, for treatment of mastitis. Please make sure it is a "breastfeeding friendly" doctor.

She must eat healthy, sleep and rest.

Lots of skin to skin contact with baby as well as nursing as much as possible is best to treat engorgement.

Here is a page on handling mastitis...
