Breastfeeding tea for increasing milk supply

by Tracy
(South Africa)

I've tried quite a few things to increase my own breast milk supply. I've tried Fenugreek capsules, breastfeeding all day, gummy berry juice and even Domperidone. Domperidone gave results after about 10 days, but cost me a little fortune.

After searching a little online, I discovered "Sacred tea for breastfeeding mothers" I organized myself a packet. This breastfeeding tea has fresh organic ingredients that are brewed the old fashion way. I was a bit worried that it would taste terrible, coz I'm not a big tea drinker and I have tasted plain fenugreek tea...which tasted like curry to me. This tea has a great smell, almost liquorish. It also has a nice taste...i do add a bit of honey and lemon though.

I drank the two cups of the tea before bedtime the first night and had a lot more milk in the morning than usual...it seems to work much better than the Domperidone, it's half the price and much healthier to take, I'm sure.

After using this breastfeeding tea for a while I decided to make my own version of it, so I went to the herbal shop and bought...

Fenugreek seed, Fennel seed, Alfalfa leaf, Anise seed and blessed thistle. Mixed them all together...
Put about 2 heaped tablespoons of this in two litres of water and boiled it on the stove for about 10 minutes.
Added lemon and honey and voila...I have my own breastfeeding tea! And it works just as well.

Now, I don't know what I would do without this tea. Making it yourself is ten times cheaper.

Hi Tracy,

Can you use alfalfa seeds instead of leaves?

Yes, you can use both! You can even sprout the seeds and use those for eating in salads. (although, have never tasted it myself) ;-)

will it work without anise?
by: Anonymous

Is there a way to make this without using anise seed? I have bought a few different teas meant to boost milk supply (mothers milk is one I can think of right off hand) and I just can't even seem to force myself to drink them.. The black licorice flavor is just horrible. I did manage to hide the flavor a bit once when steeping the tea in some chocolate flavored decaf coffee, but even that wasnt something I would like to do every day if I can avoid it..

can not find blessed thistle
by: Anne

Hi Tracy,

I'm unable to find blessed thistle, can I make the tea without it? Or do you perhaps know where I can purchase it? I live in Montana Park, Pretoria.

Thanks

Hi Anne

No, you do not need it. You can change the recipe as you like. All the other ingredients will still do their job. ;-)

raspberry leaf and squaw vine tea

by emyjon

A friend of mine has 3 children and recommended i drink raspberry leaf and squaw vine tea from 6 months to aid birth, what are your thoughts? And is it safe to use the squaw vine while breast feeding to help tone the uterus, balance the hormones & heal? Will it affect the baby?

Squaw Vine and Red Raspberry leaf tea
by: Anonymous

Hi

Both these are safe as far as I know...

During the last few weeks of pregnancy Squaw Vine stimulates the uterus to promote a safe and easy birth and is said to actually reduce pain during birth. It is used to prepare a woman's body for child birth. It is also used to relieve painful menstrual cramps.

Squaw Vine is generally used after birth by breastfeeding moms to relieve pain associated with sore nipples.

If you do take this herb during pregnancy or breastfeeding, be careful, make sure you know what other ingredients you are taking...some herbs are not safe...check with your doctor.

Red raspberry leaf is also safe during breastfeeding and pregnancy. Raspberry leaf tea contains an alkaloid that helps tone muscle (the uterus)The benefits of this tea are associated with the large amounts of vitamins and minerals found in the plant...it is rich in vitamin C, Vitamin E, calcium and Iron.

During pregnancy red raspberry leaf tea will also reduce pain and helps reduce false labor pain. It also relaxes the uterus, so that it works without extra tension. It is used to reduce swelling and bleeding after birth.

During breastfeeding raspberry leaf tea will help with producing more breast milk...you can read more about other herbs that can help with this...

When to start with the tea?

by Jamie
(TN)

I am currently 33wks pregnant and plan to breastfeed with this baby. I tried to breastfeed with my first born but I think I was just really frustrated and also had a plugged duct. I am just wondering when would be a good time to start drinking the tea? I had discussed the tea with my midwife and she said it would be okay to drink, but my question now is when is a good time to start drinking it?

Fenugreek is a questionable herb to take during pregnancy and was traditionally used as a labor stimulant. Some believe that it can cause miscarriage if used early during pregnancy.

I'm not sure about the amounts of Fenugreek in the mothers milk tea, but there is a tea by birds and bees that is used during pregnancy (also contains Fenugreek) But probably in smaller amounts. You can have a look at the reviews here.

Aloe Vera and Cactus tea
by: Tracy

Hi

There are not many reliable studies done on herbs and natural medicine, especially not for while breastfeeding.

You may try it, but keep a close eye on your baby. And take it in small amounts. Aloe has a laxative effect, so keep this in mind.

When to start tea?

by Ashley
(Texas)

I am 32 weeks pregnant and was wondering when would be the best time to start drinking the tea. With my first child I was able to produce enough for a couple of weeks, but no more after that.

My mom and both of my grandmothers all produced breast milk before they even gave birth to any of their children, and continued to successfully breastfeed. I would love to be able to successfully breastfeed my baby this time.

Where to get tea
by: Tracy

Hi

Around here I haven't really seen them sell tea for increasing breast milk supply, so I'm guessing its probably the same in many countries.

If you have a herbal shop near you, you can go buy ingredients to make your own tea. It's much cheaper as you also get much more out this way.

All you need to buy is...Fenugreek seeds, blessed thistle, Alfalfa leaf, Fennel seeds, Anise seeds.

Mix equal parts together and boil two liters of water with two heaped tables spoons of the dry mixture. I boil it for about 5 minutes. Strain and drink hot with honey and lemon juice. This works wonders for my milk supply.

If you don't want to make it yourself you can buy many teas online, a tea that is very similar to the one I make is called sacred tea for breastfeeding mothers.

by Allyson

When I had my baby boy, many people advices me to use a lactation tea especially that I was exclusively breastfeeding. And that's when the search began for a good nursing tea that tastes good and most importantly that helps keep up my milk supply. I ended up throwing many of them in the garbage but the good news is that I found what I was looking for in Healthy Nursing tea by Secrets Of Tea.
It tastes sweet and delicious and it increased my milk supply and allowed me to breastfeed my baby without worries.
I just wanted to share my experience with every breastfeeding mom because I know how frustrating that could get.

Milk maid tea

I was recommended to try organic milk maid tea because I'm mostly pumping due to the fact that my baby girl has nipple confusion, well I drink three cups a day one with breakfast one with lunch an another with dinner.

I bought it at babysr'us and it has truly worked wonders not only did my milk supply increase, but it didn't take that long... Within the next two days I noticed a huge difference in my supply.

I really recommended this product, it does have this nasty taste like black licorice, but after about your forth cup the tate is not that strong anymore.
