Electronic Cigarette

by Anonymous

I am breast feeding my 3 month old exclusively and have switched from 4-6 cigs a day to an electronic cig that I use daily to avoid my little one being exposed to second hand smoke. However, about two days after I began using it, my baby has been extremely fussy and has even had some diarrhea, but I think he may be teething as well. Should I switch back to analogs and see if it helps? I don't want to be responsible for his discomfort :(

Cigs
by: Lyssa

KellyMom.com (considered the bible of the breastfeeding world!) has some great resources on studies that have shown that breastfeeding, even while smoking, is better than formula feeding. There is minimal nicotine in the milk transferred to baby. But, there are a LOT of additives to regular smokes such as poisons that have not been studied to know how much is transferred to baby.

It would be optimal to stop smoking, but most smokers find it incredibly difficult because of the addiction. Switching to an "e cig" is generally a step in the right direction to quitting, as it is tobacco only and has no harmful second hand smoke, only water vapor. It is a great alternative! But no studies have been conducted to collect data on what changes are made to the milk or baby.

It could be a coincidence. I would monitor your baby and if it persists, contact your doctor for an evaluation on your baby.

Nicotine
by: Anonymous

Analog or electronic is not the issue. Although you are aaving the baby of harmful smoke and funneling approximately 7000 chemicals into the baby from cigarettes, an enormous portion of the problem comes from the nicotine you are dosing yourself with. Thy nicotine is entering you and your child whether you smoke or vape.
