Is Hibiscus Flower Safe?

by Mp

In the Hispanic culture we drink a variety of teas. Some hot, some cold. One of the most popular one is Jamaica (hibiscus flower). It’s a great diuretic and helps with urinary tract infections. I’m wondering how safe it is to drink it while nursing. Is there any negative effect to my milk supply?? How will it affect my baby??

Hibiscus
by: Tracy

Hi

I tried to find some info on this, there is absolutely no info on it. I would put it in an "avoid" or "use in moderation" category. It is a detoxifying herb which acts on the liver...many feel that detoxing while breastfeeding is not a good idea.

A little hibiscus is fine :)
by: Sandra

Hibiscus is high in vitamin C. I brew about 2 quarts of jamaica (hibiscus tea), add a little sugar and put it in the fridge, and it's delicious.

I am nursing a 10 month old, so she is eating homemade pureed veggies and fruits and nursing about five times + a day.

She is happy and healthy, so I would say that drinking a little hibiscus tea hot or cold is fine. Everything in moderation, as they say.

Plus if you're taking a good pre-natal and drinking a tea blend regularly for nursing then you are already on the right path, so drinking hibiscus tea which has no known adverse affects to nursing moms, should be fine.

Hibiscus tea is safe woke breastfeeding

According to Appendix C: Plant safety in the book titled "The Nursing Mother's Herbal": Hibiscus is not only safe to drink, but is a galactogogue. Meaning it will increase your milk supply. I recommend this book to any nursing mom who loves tea. :)
