less and less milk

by Marie

Hi there,

I started using formula about 2 months ago since my doctor told me that my daughter wasn't gaining enough weight.

Everyday it would seem that I was getting less and less milk. I would breastfeed her every time before giving her any supplement. Breastfeeding was getting very frustrating since it seemed like my daughter was just getting upset every time that I would try, so I slowly stop trying.

Today I basically depend completely on formula and I'm lucky if i can pump half an ounce of breast milk in a whole day!! My daughter is now 3 1/2 months old and drinks about 4-6 ounce of formula every 2-3 hours.

Is there any chance that if I keep pumping every 2 hour my milk supply would increase at this point? What can I do to get more milk, I really want to breastfeed!!

Good news!

Hi Marie

The doctors these days are far to fast to recommend formula!

I have good news for you! If you can produce any small amount of breast milk you can most probably produce a full supply of milk.

The fact that you haven't given up completely is great...it will make it much easier.

This is how milk production works: The more you stimulate your breasts the more milk you will start to produce.

Things that you can now start doing to increase your supply...
- Yes, start pumping in between feedings. Using an electric double action, hospital grade pump will help increase your supply faster.
- Get yourself a SNS (supplementary nursing system) If you don't know what this is you can read about it here. (they are cheap) This will help you increase supply while your baby drinks formula! After a while you wont need to use it anymore. Continue to first breastfeed without the lact aid and then breastfeed with it instead of giving her a bottle.
- Start using breast massage to increase supply.
- Drink plenty of water and eat well...this can really make a big difference in supply.
- Use breast compressions while breastfeeding.
- Have you thought of using some herbs like fenugreek? Fenugreek can increase supply within the first day of taking it!

Your baby is now irritable at your breast because she is accustomed to the fast flow of the bottle but as you continue to breastfeed and use the lactation aid your milk flow and supply will increase and she should become happier at the breast.

Believe in yourself...you can do this, your body was made to do this!

I'm here if you need any other advice and please let me know how things go.
