Missed period

by Mary
(Edmonton)

I have an 8 month who I breastfeed exclusively, including a few feedings at night, and has also started eating solids.

Four months after she was born my menstrual cycle came back and for three months my cycles have somewhat come on time.

My husband also got a vasectomy done, was confirmed that he was sterile, but I am about a bit over one week late on my period.

I am afraid to do a pregnancy test.

Is this normal? Is there a chance I could be pregnant?

Missed period
by: Zelda Behr

Good news, you are not pregnant, what you are experiencing is quite normal. It's called Amenorrhea.

This is when your period disappears while breastfeeding. In some cases it can stay away as long as you breastfeed or as in your case it can make your period irregular.

Here is some more info on breastfeeding and your period...

Hope this helps and don't hesitate to ask if there is something else.

So I have been breastfeeding my son for eight months. My period came back instantly after I had him, but he is down to one feeding a day and night feeding. My period is one month late... I'm so afraid to take another test. They've all been negative, but my husband is convinced I'm pregnant. I'll update when I know for sure.

Pregnant or screwy hormones?
by: Anonymous

My son is about to be 7months this month, we introduced solids the beginning of month six.

I exclusively breast feed and had my period return when my son was 3 months. My period came on the 9th of May and again on the 9th of June, this month nothing and it's now about to be the 15th of July.

I took a 3 pregnancy tests: one on July 4th, one on July 10th and another today all in which say NEGATIVE!

I have sight cramps but no other symptoms. I'm heart broken and refuse to test again.

What's going on? Why would my period just skip this month without any good reason? 😿

Missed Period while Breastfeeding

by Janice
(Ontario, Canada)

My son is almost 10 months old, & I am nursing him exclusively (he won't take a bottle or even a pacifier).

I waited until he was 6 months before I started him on solids, but my period returned about 2 months after he was born, & I have experienced regular monthly periods since. However, my last period was in November, so I have not had a period now in almost 4 months.

I have taken 2 home pregnancy tests, both of which were negative. Is this normal? I'm just wondering if I should see my doctor about the missed periods, or if this is common while breastfeeding. Thanks!

Hi Janice

It is perfectly normal to have irregular periods and missed periods while you are breastfeeding. This is because of the hormones that are produced at different levels.

Every woman's body responds differently to the hormonal changes and many ladies do experience irregular periods while nursing. The frequency of nursing will also determine whether you have a period.

The general rule though is that a missed period is considered more normal if:

- You are breastfeeding exclusively (no other foods, cereal)
- You are breastfeeding at least six times per day
- Breastfeeding at least every six hours at night
- Women who carry their babies around with them or who practice co-sleeping, also have higher levels of those hormones that might keep them from menstruating.

I think you should see your doctor just in case, its better to be safe than sorry...since your baby is not breastfeeding exclusively (he is eating solids)...the missed periods might indicate a different problem.

It's probably a good time now to also think of using some form of birth control.

Hope this helps ;-)

Me Too!
by: Sam

My baby is 8 months and is exclusively breastfed (no bottle) though on some solids now. I got my period exactly when he was 6 months and then again the month after around the same time. Now its the 8th month, the date has come and gone and no sign of a period.

I'm terrified of even the thought of another pregnancy. We do use protection but have not had many chances in the last months. Still, it takes only the one time to get pregnant. Reading these posts is reassuring to know its normal. I am too scared to get a home pregnancy test just yet.

I had the exact same thing happen to me! I have a 9 month old baby who I breastfeed. My period came back when he was 4 months old and has been regular up until now. I took a pregnancy test and it was negative though.

missed period while breastfeeding
by: Anonymous

I bled for 6 weeks after my son was born and it stopped then around the time I usually get my period I got it in February he was just over 2 months old and he is almost 4 months and I haven't had a period since but I breastfeed all night and suppliment formula in between breastfeeding so the pattern is breast bottle breast bottle but I'm a little worried about being pregnant

I did get cramps around the time I usually get my period but no sign I took 6 pregnancy tests and all were negative ... But I had the same thing happen when I got pregnant with my son I took test after test for 3 months before it finally came out positive we thought we were 9 weeks but the ultrasound said I was 3 months along !

So I'm a little worried we do use protection every time but there is always that 1% chance it didn't work any advice?
