Missed Period while Breastfeeding

by Janice
(Ontario, Canada)

My son is almost 10 months old, & I am nursing him exclusively (he won't take a bottle or even a pacifier).

I waited until he was 6 months before I started him on solids, but my period returned about 2 months after he was born, & I have experienced regular monthly periods since. However, my last period was in November, so I have not had a period now in almost 4 months.

I have taken 2 home pregnancy tests, both of which were negative. Is this normal? I'm just wondering if I should see my doctor about the missed periods, or if this is common while breastfeeding. Thanks!

missed periods while breastfeeding

Hi Janice

It is perfectly normal to have irregular periods and missed periods while you are breastfeeding. This is because of the hormones that are produced at different levels.

Every woman's body responds differently to the hormonal changes and many ladies do experience irregular periods while nursing. The frequency of nursing will also determine whether you have a period.

The general rule though is that a missed period is considered more normal if:

- You are breastfeeding exclusively (no other foods, cereal)
- You are breastfeeding at least six times per day
- Breastfeeding at least every six hours at night
- Women who carry their babies around with them or who practice co-sleeping, also have higher levels of those hormones that might keep them from menstruating.

I think you should see your doctor just in case, its better to be safe than sorry...since your baby is not breastfeeding exclusively (he is eating solids)...the missed periods might indicate a different problem.

It's probably a good time now to also think of using some form of birth control.

Hope this helps ;-)

Me Too!
by: Sam

My baby is 8 months and is exclusively breastfed (no bottle) though on some solids now. I got my period exactly when he was 6 months and then again the month after around the same time. Now its the 8th month, the date has come and gone and no sign of a period.

I'm terrified of even the thought of another pregnancy. We do use protection but have not had many chances in the last months. Still, it takes only the one time to get pregnant. Reading these posts is reassuring to know its normal. I am too scared to get a home pregnancy test just yet.

Missed period while breastfeeding

I had the exact same thing happen to me! I have a 9 month old baby who I breastfeed. My period came back when he was 4 months old and has been regular up until now. I took a pregnancy test and it was negative though.

missed period while breastfeeding
by: Anonymous

I bled for 6 weeks after my son was born and it stopped then around the time I usually get my period I got it in February he was just over 2 months old and he is almost 4 months and I haven't had a period since but I breastfeed all night and suppliment formula in between breastfeeding so the pattern is breast bottle breast bottle but I'm a little worried about being pregnant

I did get cramps around the time I usually get my period but no sign I took 6 pregnancy tests and all were negative ... But I had the same thing happen when I got pregnant with my son I took test after test for 3 months before it finally came out positive we thought we were 9 weeks but the ultrasound said I was 3 months along !

So I'm a little worried we do use protection every time but there is always that 1% chance it didn't work any advice?
