My baby refused to latch on after 2 1/2 months of successful nursing.

Today my 2 1/2 month old baby did not want to latch on after successfully nursing 5 times throughout the day.

She arched her back and screamed. I tried different positions, each breast and the same results.

After much frustration for both of us, my husband gave her a bottle of breast milk which she took without a complaint. I am very upset because I don't want to give in to a bottle every time she exhibits this behavior. I have used breast shields this entire time without any problems.

Please help. Emily

Baby refuses to latch

Giving your baby a bottle can make things worse, as the time away from your baby will cause your breast milk supply to decrease.

There are a few things that can cause your problem.

Firstly it can be nipple confusion caused by the nipple shields I'm, not sure if you are trying to wean him off the shields or if you are still using them.

You could also have a forceful letdown that causes the milk to flow too fast, causing baby to choke.

You can pump a little bit before each feed to make it easier for baby to latch.

You can also try skin to skin contact, and/or a feeding necklace to keep babies attention while feeding and a calm quite environmental will help.

Good luck and hope this helps.
