Hi Porsha

Yes, it is normal to have irregular periods while breastfeeding due to hormone fluctuation. BUT, having two periods in one month does sound a bit strange. I would go see a gynecologist just in case.

not pregnant
by: Tracy

Hi

I am convinced you are NOT pregnant. ;-)

It might be that you changed something in your daily routine to change up the cycle a little. The bloating is a normal period symptom. Not all months are always the same, especially as you get older.

Hope this helps

two weeks of bleeding

Hi Ivy

Irregular periods and spotting is normal, but a period of two weeks, non stop bleeding does not sound normal to me. If I were you, I would definitely see my doctor about it.

Irregular Period

by Adrianna

I understand it is common to have irregular periods while breastfeeding, but I'd like to know if what I'm going through is similar to anyone else.

I started to bleed or spot, I don't know what it exactly was, at 6 Months. I have been exclusively breastfeeding for a year now.

After that it was no period that month, then spotting the next, no period, then actually a period, then another period (which was ridiculously heavy like never before), and then a tiny trace of blood the next time (which was my last).

Anyone else go through this? Thank you.

Me too
by: Anonymous

I am going through the same thing. I thought I was pregnant but it does not seem to be the case since I have taken 6 pregnancy tests (within 3 weeks of missing my period) & all negative.

I think it is due to hormones fluctuating. Like for instance my son was sleeping through the night for a few months and that's when my period returned & then he started waking 2-3 times a night to feed & that's when I missed my period.

If you change even an little in the amount of feedings I am sure it has an effect!

Thank you for responding
by: Adrianna

Thank you for sharing that with me. I was freaking out I might have gotten pregnant. But nope, still irregular periods.

Definitely agree with you with the slightest amount of feeding changes. My daughter is starting to sleep a little longer at night between waking up for feedings. She's 1 year and 1 month now. Still trying to get her to eat solids but it's not happening as far as counting is as a meal. Just eating small things I eat all day. The only consistent thing I try to give her is oatmeal in the morning. But because of all that and her relying on breast milk mainly it's probably making my hormones go up and down haha.

Hi mommies!

Same situation I have right now

Baby is 15 months and I'm 2 weeks delayed already. I have a pregnancy test (will use this tomorrow) my last mens was march 16, until now I have no period.

My hubby and I used calendar method the 10 days before and after.

My first mens Dec 12, 2015 after my baby 1st bday then Jan and Feb is consistent, but I'm kinda worry coz I'm expecting my period this month on 14th, but until now I've got no period.

No plans to add another baby yet and I hope this is only about hormone issues coz I'm also an exclusive breastfeeding mom...

Baby is taking in a lot of milk though I'm trying to feed her solid foods, but she only ate a lil. She took a lot during night time..
Thanks in advance :)

Breastfeeding and period
by: Zelda Behr

There is nothing to worry about.

Breastfeeding can cause very irregular periods.
You may even skip a month or two.
Don't be alarmed if your period is heavier or lighter, longer or shorter than normal.

To relieve symptoms you can take a combination of 1500mg calcium and 400mg magnesium once a day.
Always take them together.

It will make your period more regular, relieve cramps and nipple tenderness.

You can also take one Evening primrose for nipple tenderness.

Read on breastfeeding and period...

Good luck.

Could I be pregnant or just irregular period?

I had my first menstruation when my baby was 2month old. Then I had my menstruation on a monthly basis. But this month I am worrying because up to now I don't have my period yet.

We are using condoms during sex. I am worried. I haven't used a pregnancy test hoping on having my period for this month. First day of period was April 22.

Hope you could give me an advice. Thanks!

Most probably just an irregular period. Have you changed anything in the last month such as feeding frequency, breastfeeding more at night?

I am currently still nursing my almost 13 month old baby girl.

Well for the past 3 cycles I've noticed I have spotting two to three days before my normal period starts.

Well this time around it was the 2-3 days of spotting before and my cycle went completely off on Friday and now it's Sunday and I went to use the bathroom and I see blood again... trying not to stress has anyone else have this problem..

sounds normal
by: Annie

Hi

Are your periods less severe (in length and Quantity) since you've been breastfeeding? If so, its probably just the hormones from breastfeeding causing this.

It sounds like my periods. I've noticed that I get some extra spotting after a period if I've had intercourse. Wasn't that maybe the case on Sunday?

It sounds normal to me, but I guess to put your mind at ease, its best to just have a chat about it with your doc or herbalist.

Could probably be a few other things causing this too. Change in lifestyle: eating differently or exercise. Maybe new medication?

Confused - Irregular periods

Hi all,

After I had my son I was pumping and on the mini pill. It was making me feels nuts and I was bleeding every week.

I stopped it in April. I had normal periods for April May and June. In July it all got messy.
I bled July 19-24 then July 29/30
August 3-5
August 20-25 (faint positive on the 20th later that day "period started)
Now sept 3-????

I'm breastfeeding and pumping not taking anything BC wise.

What should I do ??

See your doctor
by: Tracy

Hi

I would suggest that you see your doctor. He/she can recommend a pill that will work for you and rule out any possible health concerns.

Breastfeeding can cause a mother to skip periods or have some spotting instead of a period, but bleeding as often as you are, is not normal....as far as I know. (I am not a doctor)

If you need information about safe contraceptives while breastfeeding, that do not reduce milk supply, you can find that information here...

Call the doctor
by: Lauren

Hi,
I think a call or trip to the doctor is definately a good idea. Breast feeding can really throw your cycle off.

I did alot of searching online when I had this problem and frequent periods or spotting looked like it was pretty common, but no one ever seems to post a follow up so idk whether or not it was an actual problem.

I was lucky and only had bleeding every 2 weeks or so for a few months. You also said you got a faint positive but then started your period again that night.

Maybe implantation bleeding..? If not pregnant, you may want to look into the shot. Worked well for a friend of mine, didnt have much of an affect on her supply.

More than one period
by: Tracy

I've actually heard from a few mothers who have experienced the same issue as you. It seems to be quite common. Found this link that you might want to check out...

http://www.babycenter.com/400_post-pregnancy-periods-coming-every-two-to-three-weeks-is-th_10647162_813.bc

It could be the hormones that are settling still, although not common, it could also be something else such a piece of retained placenta or postpartum thyroiditis. If you continue to bleed more than once a month I would suggest that you see your doctor or midwife about it.

Please see someone that is "breastfeeding friendly"

You are welcome to come back and share your experience with other mothers who are struggling with the same concerns.

Thanks

Irregular periods while breastfeeding
by: Anonymous

I am also nursing 12 month old and started regular periods several months back. Based on my experience as well as what my OB told me, you can have irregular periods while not ovulating. The prolactin levels can suppress ovulation while breastfeeding. Ovulation may not return until fewer feedings or weaned. I am at 4-5 feedings a day and last 2 months, I have ovulated.

calcium and magnesium for regulating periods

by Fatemeh S
(LA CA)

My periods came back 16 months post partum and have been irregular at between 35-40 days.

I see you have tried or found info regarding supplementing with calcium and magnesium to help regulate. Can you point me in the direction of the findings? I happen to actually already have the calcium and magnesium & primrose oil supplement too. So, I will start this tomorrow!! Thank you
