Missed period

by Mary
(Edmonton)

I have an 8 month who I breastfeed exclusively, including a few feedings at night, and has also started eating solids.

Four months after she was born my menstrual cycle came back and for three months my cycles have somewhat come on time.

My husband also got a vasectomy done, was confirmed that he was sterile, but I am about a bit over one week late on my period.

I am afraid to do a pregnancy test.

Is this normal? Is there a chance I could be pregnant?

Is it normal to miss a period while breastfeeding?
by: Zelda Behr

Good news, you are not pregnant, what you are experiencing is quite normal. It's called Amenorrhea.

This is when your period disappears while breastfeeding. In some cases, it can stay away as long as you breastfeed or as in your case, it can make your period irregular.

Here is some more info on breastfeeding and your period...

https://www.breastfeeding-problems.com/breastfeeding-and-menstruation.html

Hope this helps and don't hesitate to ask if there is something else.

missed period while breastfeeding
by: Anonymous

So I have been breastfeeding my son for eight months. My period came back instantly after I had him, but he is down to one feeding a day and night feeding. My period is one month late... I'm so afraid to take another test. They've all been negative, but my husband is convinced I'm pregnant. I'll update when I know for sure.

Missed period while breastfeeding negative pregnancy test
by: Anonymous

My son is about to be 7months this month; we introduced solids the beginning of month six.

I exclusively breastfeed and had my period return when my son was three months. My period came on the 9th of May and again on the 9th of June, this month nothing, and it's now about to be the 15th of July.

I took three pregnancy tests: one on July 4th, one on July 10th and another today all in which say NEGATIVE!

I have sight cramps but no other symptoms. I'm heartbroken and refuse to test again.

What's going on? Why would my period skip this month without any good reason? 😿

Missed period breastfeeding
by: Anonymously

I have an 8-month-old daughter and am giving her breast not the bottle.

She spends much more time breastfeeding at night.

My first period returned after three months, but after that, it continued coming until six months

Now at eight months, my period didn't come.

Is this normal?

I'm waiting for a reply. If anyone can help, is it possible that one period can skip while breastfeeding?

Missed Period while Breastfeeding

by Janice
(Ontario, Canada)

My son is almost 10 months old, & I am nursing him exclusively (he won't take a bottle or even a pacifier).

I waited until he was 6 months before I started him on solids, but my period returned about 2 months after he was born, & I have experienced regular monthly periods since. However, my last period was in November, so I have not had a period now in almost 4 months.

I have taken 2 home pregnancy tests, both of which were negative. Is this normal? I'm just wondering if I should see my doctor about the missed periods, or if this is common while breastfeeding. Thanks!

missed periods while breastfeeding
by: Anonymous

Hi Janice

It is perfectly normal to have irregular periods and missed periods while you are breastfeeding. This is because of the hormones that are produced at different levels.

Every woman's body responds differently to the hormonal changes, and many ladies do experience irregular periods while nursing. The frequency of nursing will also determine whether you have a period.

The general rule though is that a missed period is considered more normal if:

- You are breastfeeding exclusively (no other foods, cereal)
- You are breastfeeding at least six times per day
- Breastfeeding at least every six hours at night
- Women who carry their babies around with them or who practice co-sleeping, also have higher levels of those hormones that might keep them from menstruating.

I think you should see your doctor just in case; it's better to be safe than sorry...since your baby is not breastfeeding exclusively (he is eating solids)...the missed periods might indicate a different problem.

It's probably a good time now to also think of using some form of birth control.

Hope this helps ;-)

Me Too!
by: Sam

My baby is eight months and is exclusively breastfed (no bottle) though on some solids now. I got my period exactly when he was six months and then again the month after around the same time. Now it's the 8th month; the date has come and gone and no sign of a period.

I'm terrified of even the thought of another pregnancy. We do use protection but have not had many chances in the last months. Still, it takes only the one time to get pregnant. Reading these posts is reassuring to know its normal. I am too scared to get a home pregnancy test just yet.

I had the same thing happen to me! I have a 9-month-old baby who I breastfeed. My period came back when he was four months old and has been regular up until now. I took a pregnancy test, and it was negative though.

missed period while breastfeeding
by: Anonymous

I bled for six weeks after my son was born and it stopped then around the time I usually get my period I got it in February. He was just over two months old, and he is almost four months, and I haven't had a period since but I breastfeed all night and supplement formula in between breastfeeding, so the pattern is breast bottle breast bottle, but I'm a little worried about being pregnant

I did get cramps around the time I usually get my period, but no sign I took six pregnancy tests and all were negative ... But I had the same thing happen when I got pregnant with my son I took test after test for three months before it finally came out positive we thought we were nine weeks, but the ultrasound said I was three months along!

So I'm a little worried we do use protection every time, but there is always that 1% chance it didn't work any advice?

prevent an unwanted pregnancy
by: Tracy

Hi Anonymous

A pregnancy test will only be accurate four days after the missed period date, BUT your periods have not yet started?

It takes a while for your hormones to kick in, and for your first period to return after ending the breastfeeding relationship. It may even take another two months before you see your first period.

Please do be advised - your fertility is bound to return and the absence of a period does not necessarily mean that you are infertile.

Please take precautions when intimate, to prevent an unwanted pregnancy.

Re- On a panic mode
by: Tracy

Hi

If you had a period in January and you only had sex in December, then, as far as I know, you cannot be pregnant. You will usually not bleed after conception has taken place. The only time you might bleed is at three months when the baby attaches itself firmly to the womb (or obviously if you have had a miscarriage).

So, no I do not think you are pregnant.
